NMP Learning Resource Center Offers Improved Services to Seafarers
The National Maritime Polytechnic (NMP) Learning Resource Center (LRC) returns to its original location at the ground floor of the NMP Ratings’ Dormitory at the NMP main complex at Brgy. Cabalawan, Tacloban City.
It is recalled that the two-storey dormitory, where the LRC occupied part of its ground floor, was severely devastated by Typhoon Yolanda. The facility was transferred temporarily to the school building to continuously provide NMP seafarer-clients with access to information and library services.
With the aim of building back what the typhoon has destroyed and offer improved services to NMP trainees, repair and rehabilitation of the structure ensued with the simultaneous procurement of reference materials.
The LRC now houses a significant number of updated technical books and non-books. Apart from the purchases, donations and grants add up to the current library holdings. Among these are books from the MV Logos Hope International Library and some private individuals, Filipiniana culture and arts resources as well as maritime education and training reference materials through a grant program from the National Commission on Culture and the Arts. Periodical clippings on current facts on maritime and other related subjects are also available.
More technical materials are continuously procured with the NMP’s intention of offering more maritime training programs in 2017.
Further, The LRC is identified as a wi-fi hotspot where NMP trainees can obtain internet access using Wi-Fi technology for their research activities.
The completion of the e-Library System this year that will utilize the Online Public Access Catalogue will hasten library services particularly on searching of books and identification of reference materials that are out on loan.
The NMP, cognizant of its role as the sole government maritime training institution in the country, continuously upgrades its facilities and services to ensure that NMP-acquired trainings are in compliance with the requirements of the Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW) Convention as amended in 2010 and NMP value-adding courses are geared towards improving the employment acceptability and enhanced competitiveness of Filipino seafarers.
NMP encourages seafarers to avail of the NMP-OWWA (Overseas Workers Welfare Administration) Seafarers’ Upgrading Program (SUP) which entitles the beneficiary to receive financial assistance for training costs from the OWWA.
Those interested to take NMP training programs may visit the NMP website www.nmp.gov.ph and its facebook page (facebook.com\nmptrainingcenter) where all related information on NMP trainings are available.
