NMP Vows Anew to Quality Faculty Development Courses Offerings

The National Maritime Polytechnic (NMP), the sole government maritime training and research institute in the country revitalizes its commitment in the delivery of quality training programs for maritime instructors and assessors.

This is manifested through its participation to the Multilateral Signing of the Memorandum of Agreement of Instructors and Assessors Course Providers last 23 January 2017 at the Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) Board Room, MARINA Central Office, Taft Ave. cor. Kalaw St., Malate, Manila.

As contained in the MOA, the MARINA authorizes the NMP to conduct approved training programs in accordance with its policies, rules and standards pursuant to international practices in maritime education and training. The programs include the Training Course for Instructors (IMO MC 6.09); the Assessment, Examination and Certification of Seafarers (IMO MC 3.12); and Training Course for Simulator Instructors and Assessors (IMO MC 6.10).

Accordingly, the NMP ensures that instructors and assessors that will handle the courses are appropriately qualified based on the staff requirements of the Course Framework approved by the MARINA.

The collaboration is an affirmation of the NMP’s capability in terms of expertise and facilities needed in the effective delivery of quality trainings for maritime faculty. Among the NMP’s significant achievements is its pioneering role in the development and offering of the IMO Model Course 6.09 with the objective of reaching out to more seafarers and aspiring seafarers.

The multilateral MOA signing establishes collaborative agreements between the MARINA and the courses providers toward standardization of training offerings for maritime instructors and assessors in accordance with the provisions of Section A 1/6 of the STCW Code for the type and level of training or assessment involved.

Other participants were the Maritime Academy of Asia and the Pacific (MAAP), Philippine Association of Maritime Training Centers, Inc. (PAMTCI), Philippine Merchant Marine Academy (PMMA) and International Mariners Management Association of Japan - Philippine-Japan Manning Consultative Council, Inc. (IMMAJ-PJMCC) Foundation.

The NMP offers Basic Courses, Deck Courses, Engine Courses and Specialized Courses pursuant to the Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW) Convention as amended in 2010 including value-adding courses towards improving the qualifications of Filipino seafarers for their employment acceptability and enhanced competitiveness.

Those interested to take NMP training programs may visit the NMP website www.nmp.gov.ph and its Facebook page (facebook.com/nmptrainingcenter) where all related information on NMP trainings are available.
